BiographyI was born in Nottingham at the customary early age and currently live in Devon. In between I've acquired a BA(hons) in Fine Art (the image on the left is of me from my degree show, I won't tell you how long ago that was!) and an MA in the History of Modern Art and Design. I've been a film-maker, an illustrator, model-maker, festival organiser, community radio reporter, clerical assistant and a civil servant. Now I'm back to being a full time artist.

Frequently Asked Questions (and other stuff you might like to know).
How can I buy a picture?
I am now selling my work through Etsy, you can see my current listings on the shop page. Payment is via Paypal. If you're interested in a painting not currently listed on Etsy please use the contact form to let me know which painting you are interested in. Prices for all paintings are given in the captions.Prices include UK Mainland shipping, if you're buying from abroad (or somewhere Royal Mail doesn't consider to be mainland UK) please contact me before making any payment to arrange the safest and most economical way of getting your painting to you.
Do you take commissions?
Very much so, I'm always open to suggestions for commissions, fees negotiable (and reasonable). I will ask for 20% of the agreed fee in advance as a non-refundable deposit. And while the movies are obviously my favourite subject I'm willing to tackle pretty much anything.
Why 'thepicturepalace.co.uk'?
I paint pictures derived from films and frankly 'multiplexpainting.co.uk' or 'fleapitart.com' don't have the same ring to them.
Why bother painting pictures from films?
Well, I like movies (films, cinema or whichever term you prefer, I've tended to use 'film' as a default because I'm English) and in spite of the wealth of cinematic imagery that surrounds us I tend to think that films as a source for painting have been somewhat overlooked by artists. By which I don't mean movie stars, we're inundated with Warhol's 'Marilyns' and sub Warhol Audrey Hepburns and ebay is awash with paintshop by numbers De Niros and Pacinos. What interests me is finding an image on a single frame of a film that can stand alone and translating that into a painting.
How do you choose the image?
I watch the film and if I see something that makes me go 'OOH' I'll try and find it again later on DVD and take a screen capture. That then becomes the reference I work from. As for choosing the films in the first place, they tend to reflect my personal taste in movies, sci-fi and fantasy, old British films that I grew up with on television and the kind of arthouse and continental cinema that I lean towards as an adult. There's a particular challenge in making a painting from a black and white film that I'm still trying to master, but I think I'm definitely getting there.
